Spotlight: How We Got Started

It began on October 4, 2005, when EarthLink joined with Wireless Philadelphia to undertake an historic mission—create the nation’s first major metropolitan city with a ubiquitous mixed-use (government and consumer) wireless broadband network. The non-profit Wireless Philadelphia had been tasked by Mayor John F. Street with creating a community where all citizens, businesses, schools, and local organizations could benefit from high-speed Internet access. This "Digital Inclusion" mission was, and has remained, the central focus of the network deployment.

"In selecting EarthLink, Wireless Philadelphia moves one step closer to fulfilling its charter to strengthen the City's economy and transform Philadelphia's neighborhoods by providing high-speed, low-cost wireless access throughout the City," stated Dianah Neff, former Wireless Philadelphia acting board chair.
